Peter Webster's Actions To Influence The Inquest Format

I have been involved in various activites so that we can try to prevent unnecessary loss of life in the future. My focus has been to bring attention to simple cost effective systems which would have prevented this and the Selby type of crash which continues to be a considerable risk, and importantly to ensure that in the event of a crash that passengers are protected from injury and fatality as best as possible.

I have had meetings in the House of Commons and Lords and numerous meetings with rail organisations. In this respect we have persuaded the coroner to widen the scope of the inquest. This will highlight firstly how little attention had been given to address this level of risk, how little the key bodies know about such systems of prevention and how, in key areas a number of rail authorities have failed to address some major problems inside the carriage in particular the type of glass and problems associated with ejection. We shall be demonstrating this in the court and exhibiting obstacle detection systems to the jury.

Much progress has been made but it is particularly important to bring attention to these issues in a public arena and to ensure that firm action for change is made. The purpose is not blame, but to ensure that people don't suffer as we have, and to make sure change takes place as quickly as possible.

I have researched all aspects of the factors involved in this crash in great detail and if anyone in the network would like to understand more about what has gone on or the details of any issue, I would be happy to tell them. Similarly we would be happy to meet any evening at our hotel for drinks and
talk etc. Could you perhaps pass this on to other people in the network if they would like to know more.
