Inquest Timetable
Christopher Felton of Gardner Leader, Newbury obtained this information from the Coroner just before the adjournment was announced. You may be interested in having the information ready for when dates are re-set.
I managed to speak to Peter Bedford. He has set out the following timetable. I would stress that not everyone will wish to attend the Inquest but this gives those who may some idea of the running order. The hearing is listed for 12 days at the Guildhall Windsor.
Week 1
Day 1
Jury sworn in. Evidence adduced as to events on the train. This will be from "live" evidence, but also from statements read out under Rule 37 (Coroners Rules). HM pathologist will also give evidence.
Day 2
Evidence will be given about Bryan Drysdale - via friends and family.
Day 3
There is an allegation that Bryan Drysdale had made a call to the police prior to the crash to say that he was going to it. This is something which is denied, however the Coroner is looking into it at the Inquest. Evidence will be given by the company who adminstered the call.
Day 4
An expert will be called to comment on the telephone record. Also psychiatric evidence will be adduced re Drysdale.
Day 5
Evidence will be given by the 2 witnesses who saw events leading up to the crash and attempted to stop Drysdale
Week 2
This is less rigidly planned but will concentrate on rail saftey concerns including HSE report on the crossing, issues such as seatbelts, lamentated glass etc. The car will be considered. It has been put back together. I understand BTP will also give evidence at this point. All evidence will be completed in the second week.
Week 3
The Coroner will sum up on day one and the Jury will return with their verdict on day 2
Witnesses
Peter Bedford assured me that unless you have received a formal summons by now you will not be required to attend.
Space is tight at the Inquest but if anyone does wish to attend it might be easier if I try to arrange it via Peter Bedford, although I suspect he will say to just come along on the day. He did say that he hoped the media interest will have calmed slightly in the second week so there may be more room to accomodate. Personally, I think this is unlikely.
